Nov. 16-17, 2010 "2nd annual Maritime Business & Technology Summit"
The Maritime Alliance is pleased to host the 2nd annual Maritime Business and Technology Summit & Exposition, Nov. 16-17, 2010, in San Diego, CA. The conference focus is to promote maritime technology and business opportunities in the global maritime technology industry. Because of the very large, local maritime technology community and the convergence of academia, government, industry, and military interest, San Diego represents a rich eco-system for US and international maritime technology companies.
The Conference and Exposition is an excellent opportunity for small to medium-sized companies to network with decision-makers representing academia, government, and military as well as to meet potential channel, strategic & technology partners among attendees, exhibitors and speakers. For large companies, it is an opportunity to meet companies from around the U.S. and the world showing innovative technologies that need channel and strategic partners to be successful with large opportunities.
Multiple agencies and organizations seeking innovative maritime technologies at The 2nd annual Maritime Business & Technology Summit
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is seeking coastal detection, tracking, and identification capabilities along the nation's coastal border. Specifically the southwest border is seeing an increase in vessels smuggling contraband and persons along the coast as the terrestrial border is secured.
The target by which these capabilities will be measured is the following:
A "panga" is a 28-30 foot open vessel of wood and gelcoat construction with no metal fittings powered by a single 150-250hp outboard motor.
A system capable of detecting, tracking, and indentifying (discriminate this from a recreational fishing boat) the vessel described at a minimum distance of 24 nautical miles (in a yearly average off-shore San Diego sea and atmospheric state) is being sought. Items for consideration: sound, RF leakage, heat signature, small radar signature, wood construction, low profile etc...
Representatives from Customs & Border Protection and other DHS agencies will be attending the Summit to look for these and other technologies.
National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): Staff of the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (NOAA) will participate in the conference looking for innovative maritime technologies from around the world. The mission of the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries is to serve as the trustee for the nation's system of marine protected areas, to conserve, protect, and enhance their biodiversity, ecological integrity and cultural legacy. The Office also has agreements with a number of other countries to help identify technologies and techniques to manage their respective national marine sanctuaries.
The Office is looking for technologies in the following categories:
Aerial surveillance;
Assessing corrosion of undersea artifacts and wrecks;
Assessment, monitoring and ecosystem restoration post removal of underwater munitions;
Enforcement monitoring capabilities;
Long-distance monitoring for use/activities on-water and underwater;

San Diego, CA 92101
As populations and urban development compete for scarce land resources in island countries and coastal areas, planners and civil engineers have resorted to land reclamation. However, this is an expensive and destructive option. Increasingly, places like Japan, the Netherlands and Monaco have turned to very large floating platforms (VLFPs) which can be suitably deployed in high seas for options ranging from housing to airports to oil exploration.
January 29, 2010 "The Coastal and Ocean Economies - A National, State and Local Analysis"
With Judith Kildow, Ph.D., principal investigator with the National Ocean Economics Program
California's ocean economy directly provided approximately 408,000 jobs and more than $11.4 billion in wages and salaries in 2000, and when multiplier effects are included, those numbers increase to 700,000 jobs and more than $24 billion in wages and salaries. The state's coastal economy is more than $1 trillion. As Dr. Kildow's report underscores, "The natural resources of the coast and coastal ocean are a solid foundation for California's economy and these resources must be sustained to maintain the strength in the six sectors evaluated within the Ocean Economy and the much larger Coastal Economy."
